For whatever reason, I find the cities to be incredibly exhilarating. There’s an energy that overtakes my body, a passion that fills my soul, and a love that bubbles over all I do.
I have come to believe that in the city you can get a better glimpse of God’s creation.
Now, some people would say the place to see God’s creation would be nature. It’s when they go off into the mountains, or hike a trail in the woods, or go camping for a weekend, or sit on top of a mountain looking over the tree line, or get away from people to find solitude.
In these moments, many people sense God’s presence, or a Divine being. They are reminded of God’s bigness and their littleness. They see beautiful creation- mountains, trees, the birds of the air, a canopy of leaves, a spectrum of colors, the sound of silence; the beauty of nature.
Me, on the other hand, I find God in the city.
I believe the city is the place full of God’s ultimate creation; humanity. People are everywhere.
As a Christian, I am a firm believer that God is the Ultimate Creator. God’s ultimate creation, the climax of God’s creation, the completed masterpiece, is humanity.
Upon all people is the fingerprint, the imprint, of God. And, so somehow when we see people, we get a glimpse of the divine. We see a bit of God when we see people. The city is where you are physically inundated with God’s ultimate creation.
More than any other place, in the city, you are surrounded by the diversity of the Ultimate Creator’s ultimate creation. There are different races and ethnicities, rainbows of flesh tones and hair colors, the sound of countless languages and accents, physical reminders of rich and poor or young and old.
God’s ultimate creation is everywhere. You see the full spectrum of this creation. And I think it’s stunning.
The second reason why I love the city is that it’s full of God’s ultimate creation’s creations.
Just as I am firm believer that God is the Ultimate Creator, I am also firm believer that God’s ultimate creation, humanity, was given the job to be co-creators. God’s ultimate creation was to go out and create.
And, the city is where you are reminded of, see, and are surrounded by God’s ultimate creation’s creations. Cities are the epicenters of architecture, art, music, design, education, fashion, law, and creativity.
Because of this, then, cities are epicenters of influence. What happens in New York, Chicago, DC, or LA trickles out to the rest of the country. Whether it’s fashion, music, television shows, education practices, law, and ways of thought. What starts in the cities moves out across the country.
God’s ultimate creation’s creations are everywhere in the city. You see the full spectrum of this creation. And I think it’s stunning.
This is what I explore on the most recent episode of my podcast, The Why Behind the What.
